Blue Shampoo vs Purple Shampoo… Is it Really That Different?

Do you know what the difference between blue shampoo and purple shampoo is? They’re basically the same right? Wrong! In this blog, I go over the difference between both.

First things first.

If your hair looks like this, use blue shampoo!

Why do we even use purple or blue shampoo? These shampoos were designed to help cancel out unwanted tones in your hair in between salon visits. Let’s be honest, toner fades! Typically, you are recommended to come and retone your hair every 6-8 weeks. That should be around 16-18 washes.

However, when toner fades, unwanted brassy tones do come out. So this is when you need to decide whether to invest in purple shampoo or blue shampoo.

Blue shampoo was designed to cancel out unwanted orange tones in the hair. This is perfect for someone who has naturally darker hair that went lighter. Why? Because darker hair has red and orange undertones. Looking at the color wheel, orange is right across from blue, therefore it cancels it out! If you put purple over orange hair, it will probably not do a whole lot.

Purple shampoo is designed to cancel out unwanted yellow tones. This is great for someone with lighter hair naturally. Refer to the picture to see what your natural color with underlying pigments is! If you look at a color wheel, purple is across from yellow, so purple will neutralize the yellow. If you put blue over the yellow hair, sometimes it can turn green, so beware!

Soooo.. why do I have to use it in the first place? That’s what my toner is for!

Yes, toner is also something that helps cancel out unwanted tones. Everyone has a natural underlying pigment, red, orange, or yellow. When you lighten your hair, these tones peek out. From there you have to tone them so you don’t have banana yellow or orange hair.

However, toner is just color, so it does fade. This is why having a purple or blue shampoo is great in combating unwanted tones. If you are not someone who wants to use blue or purple shampoo, click here to book an appointment for a toner!

Can it dry my hair out?

For best results leave the blue or purple shampoo on for 3-5 minutes or follow the manufacturers’ directions on the bottle. Do not exceed the suggested time as it could dry your hair out (I am looking at you Tik Tok trends).

It is also important to note that you only need to use it once a week or whenever your hair starts to look brassy. If your hair is really porous, it can overtone your hair so beware! If you overuse the product it could affect your toner or vivid colors.

It is important to note that blue and purple shampoo does not cleanse your hair, despite being a shampoo. Don’t swap it out for regular shampoo, as most do not have the proper cleansers in the formula to clean your scalp. They are strictly for toning purposes.

Are you not really feeling the shampoo thing? Don’t worry! There are many other alternatives. For example, we have Moroccanoil Color Depositing Conditioners that are moisturizing and also combat unwanted tones.
