How to Properly Put in Dry Shampoo + Favorite Brands

In this blog, I go over how to properly use dry shampoo and I go over what my favorite brands are. Dirty hair be gone!

What is it?

Once a couple of days go by after washing your hair, your scalp starts to get oily. This is normal, but you shouldn’t wash your hair every day. I love using dry shampoo to prolong the time in between washes. Dry shampoo is a formulated powder that absorbs the oils on your scalp to give it that freshly washed look. It also helps with the smell!

Favorite Brands:

One of the best things about dry shampoo is that you don’t have to spend a pretty penny on it.

  1. Batiste Dry Shampoo – This specific line of dry shampoo is lovely because it comes in many different fragrances and colors. Being a dark-haired lady, sometimes dry shampoo can leave a white cast, therefore having different color options is great!
  2. Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam – Yes you read that correctly, FOAM! This Ouai product is designed for all hair types and it “cleanses” your hair while conditioning it at the same time. It also gives you that little boost of volume that we all love. This product retails for $28.00 on Sephora.com.
  3. Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo – Yes, Moroccanoil really does it all. What I love about the Moroccanoil dry shampoo is that it is lightweight and really caters to the different tones of hair. For example, the light tone has violet reflections so it helps combat the brassiness!

How to Properly Use it:

Some people think that you just spray it and you are good to go! While you can do that, it is a little more complicated than that. First, you want to shake up the can and take small subsections throughout your hair and spray 8-12 inches away from your hair.

Once you are happy with the amount of product you used, wait for it to dry. Thats right… DO NOT TOUCH! One it is dry, flip your head upside down and shake it up with your fingertips.

Disperse through your head with your fingers or a brush and BAM! No one will ever know you haven’t washed your hair for 5 days.

Is it bad for my hair?:

No, it is not bad for your hair. However, you do want to make sure you are properly exfoliating your scalp to get rid of any excess buildup. My favorite way to exfoliate my scalp is using Kenra Professional Deep Detox Scrub that has exfoliating beads and charcoal to draw out any toxins. Available for purchase at Rebel Femme.

You also have to be careful of residue, stickiness, and anything that is too heavy for your hair.

Not a fan of spraying stuff in your hair? It’s okay, I’m not either. One of my favorite ways to hide dirty hair is a variety of updos and cute hats. Scarves are also a great option. Click here to see my favorite heatless hairstyles.
