Does Barrel Size Matter when Curling Hair?

How do you know which barrel size to use for each style when curling hair? This blog goes over barrel sizes and why they matter!

One thing I love about hot tools is all of the different styles I can create in my hair. There are so many endless possibilities, but how do you know which barrel size to use for each style? The barrel size (the part of the iron that gets hot) on a curling iron DOES matter when curling hair, because each size is created for a certain type of look. I chose 5 different styles and broke down what barrel size I would use for each look.

Tight Curls:

Throw it back to the 80’s with some fun tight curls. I love this look because it gives you volume and lots of texture. To create this look, you will need a 3/4 inch barrel or smaller. Pro Tip: take small sections (the same size of the barrel) to get the curliest curls.

Beach Waves:

Tousled beach waves are all the rage right now. My absolute favorite tool to achieve this look is t3 1″ Curling Wand. I like to alternate the curl pattern throughout the head for a lived-in style.

Hollywood Glam:

This look will never go out of style. To create this classy and elegant style, you can use a barrel size from 1 1/4 inches and up. Curl your hair towards your face for a Hollywood Glam style.

Princess Curls:

This style of curl is one of my favorites for a simple yet elegant look. I feel that beach waves are good for a lived-in style, while princess curls are perfect for any occasion. This look can be achieved with a 1 1/4 inch barrel with all curls facing away from the face.

Loose Waves:

This is my go to look when I just want slight texture in my hair. By using a 1 1/2 inch barrel, it will give your hair the loose and subtle texture pictured above. Alternate curls throughout the hair. Pro Tip: spray with a strong hold hairspray and let it dry before thoroughly brushing out the curls to create soft waves.
